Black Bamboo
This piece is the result of over ten thousand interactions between material and tool, an intensive hand milling process beginning with fifty bamboo stalks. It represents a practice in contemplative mindfulness through the use of only three hand tools; a Japanese hatchet, a block plane and a draw knife.
Traditional hand, craft and artistic abilities have undergone a loss of value in contemporary society. The shelter their abilities once offered comparable to a shelter that offer’s no protection. Making their mastery a fool’s errand.
