Walnut, Concrete, Various Hardwoods
This piece of Walnut was purchased from an individual who had inherited it from his father. It was then cut into an orthogonal grid while preserving the sawdust created during the process. As we recall memories of the past, they are rebuilt from information created from the last recollection. This cycle of loss is embodied here in a grid, or system of information and preserved loss in retained sawdust. Much in the same way be have placed orthogonal systems of organization upon landscapes, our desire to create a definitive understandings of place and memory result in loss of the past, a history forgotten.
